Western Power's initiative to install standalone power systems, consisting of solar panels, batteries, and backup generators, was pitched as a greener and more cost-effective alternative. Unreliable Outages and Noisy Generators
Ben Parsons, a farmer in Tenterden, shares his experience of countless power outages since the installation of his standalone system. The promise of uninterrupted power has turned into a frustrating reality, with the generator's noise disrupting his family's peace, especially for his young children.
"It's not just the inconvenience of power outages, but the constant noise of the generator running is a real concern for our family's well-being," Parsons explains. This issue is not isolated, as many residents have reported similar experiences, questioning the reliability and sustainability of these systems.
Lack of Community Engagement
The rollout of these standalone units has been met with criticism for the lack of community consultation. Linda Gray, the chief executive of the Shire of Cranbrook, highlights the absence of engagement, with residents like an 85-year-old woman finding out about the change only when workers arrived at her doorstep.
"The lack of communication and consent is a significant concern. Residents should have a say in such a significant change to their energy infrastructure," Gray emphasizes.
Broken Promises and Ongoing Issues
For those who received standalone systems during the initial rollout, the problems have been persistent. Owen Grahame, a resident of South Newdegate, has been dealing with a faulty system for years, running his generator almost constantly due to broken solar panels. Western Power's response has been slow, only recently offering to replace his system.
"It's been a long and frustrating journey. I've had to deal with the noise and the constant worry of whether my system will work when I need it most," Grahame shares.
Western Power's Response
A Western Power spokesperson acknowledges the initial challenges, stating, "We recognize that some units required upgrades as we learned more about individual needs." The utility claims that 96% of users now experience better reliability.
However, the experiences of farmers like Bernie Giles in Northern Ravensthorpe contradict this claim. His system has had issues from the start, and he has been promised an upgrade, highlighting the ongoing nature of these problems.
A Deeper Look
This situation raises questions about the rush to implement new energy solutions without proper testing and community involvement. The promise of greener energy should not come at the cost of reliability and peace of mind for residents.
